How to Get Other Permits and Licenses

Motorcycle (Class M)

Take your first steps toward getting a motorcycle permit and license by studying the Motorcycle Operator's Manual, taking your permit test, and practicing for your motorcycle road test.

Commercial Driver License (Class A, B, or C)

If you already have a New York State driver license you can get a commercial driver license (CDL) which will allow you to drive a variety of large and heavy motor vehicles and apply for additional license endorsements.

Younger and New Drivers Permit and License Restrictions

Learner permit holders of any age must obey certain restrictions about where they can drive and always be accompanied by a licensed driver to practice driving. Drivers under 18 must also follow other restrictions about when and where they can drive.

In order to allow young drivers time to gain experience, New York State requires young people under the age of 18 to progress through the phases of the State's Graduated Driver License Law (GDL). The GDL allows drivers in this at-risk age group to gain experience and gradually display their safe driving ability.

All new license holders, regardless of age, are subject to a 6-month probationary period during which their license can be suspended or revoked for certain driving-related convictions.
